King Pyrrhus said, after he won the day against the Romans at Actium, "One more such victory, and we shall be undone." He'd carried the field, and lost a third of the men, but Rome could afford that, he could not.<\/p>\n

By overreacting against the Occupy protesters, the various cities and universities and the like are winning victories, and losing the war. They are clearing parks, postponing or driving away the chants, and demonstrating that they have the power to act. But their power derives, to a large degree, from the general public. The general public may not like "dirty hippies"(or folks characterized that way), or messy protesters, or traffic delays, or malcontents rocking the boat … but they also don't like seeing non-violent protesters walloped with police batons, or great-grandmothers or pregnant women or students sitting with locked arms being hosed down with pepper spray.<\/p>\n

Wars are won by the side that doesn't make the last mistake. It's not the crime that gets you, it's the cover-up. By overreacting, overstretching, creating images that repel the general public, the authorities quashing Occupy protests are doing more t build support for them than the protesters ever could. #ddtb<\/p>\n
