{"id":24330,"date":"2011-12-07T23:17:28","date_gmt":"2011-12-08T06:17:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/?p=24330"},"modified":"2014-06-17T07:33:48","modified_gmt":"2014-06-17T13:33:48","slug":"amazing-holmes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2011\/12\/07\/amazing-holmes.html","title":{"rendered":"Amazing Holmes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/sherlock_cumerbatch_freeman.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-24331\" title=\"Sherlock\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/sherlock_cumerbatch_freeman-300x209.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/sherlock_cumerbatch_freeman-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/sherlock_cumerbatch_freeman.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Okay, I just plain ol&#8217; love BBC&#8217;s <em>Sherlock<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This 2010 modern retread of the Sherlock Holmes canon is lovingly crafted, in considering how to make the Holmes tales set in modern London with as much &#8220;mood&#8221; as the gaslamp \/ fog \/ Victorian era that we&#8217;re more familiar with.<\/p>\n<p><em>Doctor<\/em> <em>Who<\/em> showrunning Steven Moffat is co-creator, occasional writer, and an executive producer on the show, and there are times when Holmes comes off as a cross between the Doctor and Gregory House.<\/p>\n<p>But there&#8217;s more to Holmes here than simple brilliance, arrogance, and\/or grumpiness. \u00a0The show touches multiple times on the ways in which he&#8217;s actually not an emotionally \/ psychologically well man (when accused of being a psychopath, he angrily corrects his accuser that he&#8217;s actually &#8220;a high-functioning sociopath&#8221;). \u00a0Benedict Cumberbatch does an amazing job as this heroic not-a-hero.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/sherlock_titlecard.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-24332\" title=\"Sherlock title card\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/sherlock_titlecard-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/sherlock_titlecard-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/12\/sherlock_titlecard.jpg 505w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Martin Freeman (who&#8217;s on tap to play Bilbo Baggins in <em>The Hobbit<\/em>) does excellent work as Dr. John Watson &#8212; ironically, once again an invalided army medic from the battlefields of Afghanistan (the more things change &#8230;). \u00a0As Holmes&#8217; flat-mate, associate, blogger, and companion, he walks a tightrope between being the less-brilliant foil and more-functional associate of the great detective. He won a best supporting actor BAFTA for the role.<\/p>\n<p>The bringing of the stories to modern times is seamless. The characters are believable; the use of London&#8217;s landscapes for exteriors is exquisite (other exterior bits and interiors were shot in and around Cardiff), including the tilt-shift effects; the music and cinematography and story-telling tricks (floating graphics for text messages, plot count-downs, etc.) \u00a0are all very nicely done.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a single problem with <em>Sherlock<\/em>, but it&#8217;s a huge one. \u00a0It suffers from typical BBC micro-seasons. \u00a0The first series of the show is three 90 minute episodes. \u00a0That they&#8217;re 90 minutes is a saving grace, but &#8230; three episodes? \u00a0<em>Three?<\/em> \u00a0Dammit, I want <em>more<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>More is coming, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tvovermind.com\/sherlock\/sherlock-season-2-delayed\/85926\">early 2012<\/a>, and I eagerly await it.<\/p>\n<p>The first series is available on disc.
