The RIAA and other content producers have made much of the alleged stat that tracks from Eminem’s newest CD were the Number 1 download on music sharing services before the CD was released. “You see?” they thundered. “Internet piracy is a huge problem! We must further regulate the market!”<\/p>\n

Problem is, it seems like a lot of those files may have been intentionally put up there by the record label itself<\/a>. And the intent may have been to promote the album by word of mouth, to try and prevent “real” illegitimate downloads … and, perhaps, to inflate piracy numbers.<\/p>\n
