Oh, spare<\/i> me the snarky distinction between "literary fiction" and "genre fiction," complete with eye-rolling blurbs like, "It's not future classics that push digital sales, but more downmarket fare. No cliche is left unturned, no adjective underplayed. … In digital, dross rises."<\/i><\/p>\n

Amidst all the nose-pinching, there are a few items of note: "The reading public in private is lazy and smutty. E-readers hide the material. Erotica sells well. My own downmarket literary fetish is male-oriented historical fiction (histfic). Swords and sails stuff. I'm happier reading it on an e-reader, and keeping shelf space for books that proclaim my cleverness."<\/i><\/p>\n

While I grant there have been times when I've had a few trepidations about a particularly awful book cover as I walk down the street (and need not worry about it when reading my Kindle), I don't buy books for the shelf display, nor do I buy different paper books for home vs. my ereader. <\/p>\n

But, then, I'm one of those proles who enjoys his genre fiction, rather than dallying over Dickens (which was mass-market media in its era) or Joyce. #ddtb<\/p>\n
