Romney is harping on "fairness" — which is kind of funny, because the Right has tended to always pooh-pooh "fairness" as being un-American. "Life isn't fair," we're told, and "this is a just, world, not a fair world," and "Fairness is a code word for communism" and other drivel.<\/p>\n

Of course, what Romney considers "fair" is … an odd mix of Republican talking points.<\/p>\n

"\u201cWe will stop the unfairness of urban children being denied access to the good schools of their choice; …"<\/i><\/p>\n

Translation: We will dismember the public school system and replace it with vouchers. Which won't really help urban children that much, but will help lots of parochial schools.<\/p>\n

"… we will stop the unfairness of politicians giving taxpayer money to their friends\u2019 businesses; …"<\/i><\/p>\n

That's not "unfair," it's "corrupt." If it's going on in an illegal fashion, charges should be brought. If it's business as usual — something that's been common in every government, on every level — then it should be pointed out and condemned, certainly, but in a fair fashion. <\/p>\n

"… we will stop the unfairness of requiring union workers to contribute to politicians not of their choosing; …<\/i><\/p>\n

Translation: We'll keep all those left-leaning unions from spending money on political campaigns. Only right-leaning corporations should be allowed to do that.<\/p>\n

" …we will stop the unfairness of government workers getting better pay and benefits than the taxpayers they serve; …<\/i><\/p>\n

Translation: Class warfare is only un-American when it's the poor accusing the rich. It's a valid talking point when setting private workers against public workers. Never mind that it's a statistically dubious association at best — everyone loves throwing rocks at the government, especially when there are unions involved.<\/p>\n

" … and we will stop the unfairness of one generation passing larger and larger debts on to the next."<\/i><\/p>\n

Hmmmm. Which party has done more to increase the deficit over the past half-century? And aside from using Fairy Scissors and Pixie Dust to magically eliminate all those mean debts, what specific programs are you going to cut (since clearly increasing taxes is completely off the table), and at what cost to folks who might much more righteously consider it "unfair"?<\/p>\n
