{"id":27567,"date":"2012-04-25T13:51:05","date_gmt":"2012-04-25T19:51:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2012\/04\/25\/comic-book-writers-vs-artists-yet-again.html"},"modified":"2012-04-25T13:51:05","modified_gmt":"2012-04-25T19:51:05","slug":"comic-book-writers-vs-artists-yet-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2012\/04\/25\/comic-book-writers-vs-artists-yet-again.html","title":{"rendered":"Comic Book Writers vs Artists (yet again)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The suggestion that artists have nothing to do with the creative success of comic books, that it&#39;s all about the writer, is as <s>insane<\/s> <i>ill-founded<\/i> as the Image-era suggestion that comics are all about the artists and who needs writers anyway?<\/p>\n<p>There are comics I&#39;ve read where I read them despite the artist.  And there are comics I&#39;ve read (fewer, but a few) where I&#39;ve read them despite the writer. I&#39;d say that a writer is <i>more<\/i> important, but maybe 60\/40 &#8212; it&#39;s a <i>story<\/i> after all, not just a set of pin-ups. I find continuity of writer on a title more important than continuity of the artist, for example.<\/p>\n<p>Though that breakdown may still be wrong.  Because I have some posters\/pin-ups and collections of comic art that I enjoy and treasure just for themselves, and have generally been more satisfied with <i>per se<\/i> than text-only paperbacks telling comic book universe stories.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, a <i>great<\/i> comic combines great writing <i>with<\/i> great art &#8212; and, in fact, sees the artist <i>adding<\/i> to the story being told, contributing detail as well as fleshing out the writer&#39;s vision.
