{"id":2771,"date":"2002-09-24T10:07:59","date_gmt":"2002-09-24T15:07:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/?p=2771"},"modified":"2002-09-24T10:07:59","modified_gmt":"2002-09-24T15:07:59","slug":"layers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2002\/09\/24\/layers.html","title":{"rendered":"Layers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The new head of the TSA is thinking of phasing out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/news\/812191.asp?0cb=-21924124\">random screening at the gate<\/a> for air travel, in an effort to make flying more convenient.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, I certainly applaud his goal.  But, just to be contrarian, let me point out that good security is usually <i>security in depth<\/i>.  A computer security expert will tell you that simply putting a kick-ass firewall up still leaves you vulnerable to attacks from within, from connections you didn&#8217;t know you had, from things that manage to slip through that outer wall.  Just like the Maginot Line, there&#8217;s only so much you can do to harden the exterior, and only so much benefit you can get that way.<\/p>\n<p>If your only checkpoint is the main one, then you&#8217;d better be rock-solid certain that there&#8217;s absolutely no way for it to be bypassed.
