{"id":28399,"date":"2012-06-21T12:53:11","date_gmt":"2012-06-21T18:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2012\/06\/21\/oppressed-and-oppressors.html"},"modified":"2012-06-21T12:53:11","modified_gmt":"2012-06-21T18:53:11","slug":"oppressed-and-oppressors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2012\/06\/21\/oppressed-and-oppressors.html","title":{"rendered":"Oppressed and oppressors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It is a sad fact that those who have once been oppressed &#8212; bitterly, justly, profoundly oppressed &#8212; do not seem to be immune to the human tendency to make things about &quot;Us vs Them&quot; and to make sure that &quot;Us&quot; don&#39;t have to treat &quot;Them&quot; as equals.<\/p>\n<p>Thus the irony of the Southern Baptist Convention &#8212; a group with a long history of racism and support of the Southern slave and Jim Crow culture &#8212; has just elected its first black president &#8212; and at the same time passed a resolution denying\u00a0that gays could legitimately be seeking protection of their &quot;civil rights&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>Rev. Dwight McKissic, pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas, was one of the crafters of that resolution.<\/p>\n<p><i>&#39;McKissic, who is black, said it was \u201can unfair comparison\u201d for gays to equate same-sex marriage with civil rights because there is not incontrovertible scientific evidence that homosexuality is an innate characteristic, like skin color. \u201cThey\u2019re equating their sin with my skin,\u201d he said.&#39;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Obviously Rev. McKissic doesn&#39;t think _religion_\u00a0is a civil right, either, since it is not &quot;an innate characteristic&quot; and most faithful\u00a0consider the beliefs and activities of other denominations or faiths to be sinful.<\/p>\n<p>McKissic went on: <i>&quot;When homosexuals have spent over 200 years in slavery, when homosexuals have been legally defined as three-fifths human, when homosexuals have been denied the right to vote and own property because they are homosexuals, then we can begin a discussion of parallels [between the civil rights and gay rights movements].&quot;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>I guess <i>thousands<\/i> of years of being legally killed, imprisoned, reviled, fired from jobs, denied the opportunity\u00a0to live openly with their loved ones, and in fact of being open about themselves, doesn&#39;t count.<\/p>\n<p>Rev.
