{"id":2900,"date":"2002-09-05T21:56:19","date_gmt":"2002-09-06T02:56:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/?p=2900"},"modified":"2002-09-05T21:56:19","modified_gmt":"2002-09-06T02:56:19","slug":"how_to_get_out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2002\/09\/05\/how_to_get_out.html","title":{"rendered":"How to get out of jury duty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rockymountainnews.com\/drmn\/local\/article\/0,1299,DRMN_15_1373542,00.html\">Just don&#8217;t show up one day during deliberations.<\/a>  But be sure and bring a toothbrush with you when you get back from vacation.<\/p>\n<p>A Denver woman, who had a vacation scheduled while the jury was going through deliberations no-showed one morning.  When she reported back in, the judge was not amused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"block\">&#8220;I left town,&#8221; she told the judge. &#8220;I went on my vacation.&#8221; <br \/>\n&#8220;Why?&#8221; he asked. <br \/>\n&#8220;Because I already had planned to,&#8221; she replied, adding that she had informed the court of her vacation plans during jury selection. <br \/>\nMcGahey reminded her that he told her she would have to complete her jury service before taking off on vacation. <br \/>\n&#8220;And I told you I would be gone,&#8221; she replied.<\/p>\n<p>The judge decided find her in contempt of court.  He fined her $250 &#8212; the amount she was paid as a juror &#8212; and sentenced her to six hours in a holding cell, the amount of time the rest of the jurors deliberated the day she took off.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a story worth reading, as are the judge&#8217;s comments to the slacker in question. <\/p>\n<p><small>(I just had to use that headline, given the number of Google hits I get here on just that subject.)<\/small><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just don&#8217;t show up one day during deliberations.
