{"id":29061,"date":"2012-08-06T10:22:12","date_gmt":"2012-08-06T16:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2012\/08\/06\/seeking-sikh.html"},"modified":"2012-08-14T09:30:47","modified_gmt":"2012-08-14T15:30:47","slug":"seeking-sikh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2012\/08\/06\/seeking-sikh.html","title":{"rendered":"Seeking Sikh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kudos to learning about about things you don&#39;t know, especially when they are (sadly) in the news.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reshared post from +<a href='https:\/\/plus.google.com\/105643205000971419734'>Isaac Sher<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In the wake of the tragic shooting of innocent Sikhs in recent days, I&#39;ve taken it upon myself to learn a bit more about the Sikh people. \u00a0I&#39;ve known that Sikhs are distinct from Hinduism and Islam, I went to high school with a couple of Sikhs but didn&#39;t know them particularly well, and I knew that their faith required turbans and unshaved beards of the men &#8212; and that was about it.<\/p>\n<p>I try to follow the idea of &quot;learn something new every day&quot;, and I figured that today I&#39;d learn something more about the Sikhs. \u00a0Just at a glance at this wikipedia entry, I&#39;ve already learned a great deal of interesting new things &#8212; like the fact that Sikhs practice a sort of monotheism, but in a much more abstract way than Judaism, Islam, or Christianity, and that they also believe in Karma and Reincarnation. \u00a0 Neat stuff! \u00a0 They also carry &quot;the five K&#39;s&quot; as markers of their faith:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Kesh (uncut hair, usually tied and wrapped in the Sikh Turban, Dastar)<br \/>&#8211; Kanga (a wooden comb, usually worn under the Dastar)<br \/>&#8211; Katchera (specially made cotton underwear as a reminder of the commitment to purity)<br \/>&#8211; Kara (an iron bracelet, which is a symbol of eternity)<br \/>&#8211; Kirpan (a curved sword, which comes in different sizes; for example in the UK Sikhs would wear a small sharp dagger, whereas in the Punjab Sikhs would wear the traditional curved sword, from one to three feet in length)<\/p>\n<p>I knew about the hair and turban and even the comb, but had no idea about the katchera and kara &#8212; and I didn&#39;t realize that the Kirpan sword was considered a holy symbol, as opposed to being just a type of sword that Sikhs traditionally trained with. \u00a0I find myself wondering what sort of Kirpan a Sikh would wear in the USA, since I would imagine that certain weapon laws would make wearing a sword or even dagger problematic at best.<\/p>\n<p>So, I&#39;ve learned something new! \u00a0Neat stuff, this. \u00a0Give it a read!<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style='clear:both;'>\n<p style='margin-bottom:5px;'><strong>Embedded Link<\/strong><\/p>\n<div style='height:120px;width:120px;overflow:hidden;float:left;margin-top:0px;padding-top:0px;margin-right:10px;vertical-align:top;text-align:center;clear:both;'>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img style='max-width:none;' src='https:\/\/images0-focus-opensocial.googleusercontent.com\/gadgets\/proxy?container=focus&#038;gadget=a&#038;resize_h=100&#038;url=http%3A%2F%2Fupload.wikimedia.org%2Fwikipedia%2Fcommons%2Fthumb%2Ff%2Ff9%2FBangla_Sahib_Gurdwara_Delhi_-_Temple_and_Food.jpg%2F220px-Bangla_Sahib_Gurdwara_Delhi_-_Temple_and_Food.jpg' border='0' \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href='http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sikh'>Sikh &#8211; Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia<\/a><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn the Gur\u016b Gra\u1e45th S\u0101hib, the Sikh scripture, the concept of the supreme reality is dynamic.
