{"id":2940,"date":"2002-08-31T17:10:37","date_gmt":"2002-08-31T22:10:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/?p=2940"},"modified":"2002-08-31T17:10:37","modified_gmt":"2002-08-31T22:10:37","slug":"the_irony_gods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2002\/08\/31\/the_irony_gods.html","title":{"rendered":"The Irony Gods are chortling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Johannesburg Summit on sustainable growth?  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A17168-2002Aug30.html\">Not very sustainable<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>300-400 tons of trash have been generated, only 20% of which is being recycled.\n<li>An estimated 5 million pieces of paper are being printed out or used.\n<li>The 45,000 delegates are each going through an average of 53 gallons of water a day.\n<li>Recycling bins are overflowing with nonrecyclable trash.\n<li>The travel to distant South Africa is generating about 300k tons of CO2.<\/ul>\n<p class=\"block\">The Johannesburg Climate Legacy project hopes to offset this by raising nearly $3 million from participating countries, corporations and individuals, and using it to implement 16 projects to reduce carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p>Only $300,000 has been raised, and only seven of the 192 countries at the summit have pledged donations.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps they&#8217;ve been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/article\/0,,2002391624,00.html\">too <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/slate.msn.com\/\/?id=2070158\">busy <\/a>eating and drinking.<\/p>\n<p><small>(via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.instapundit.com\/archives\/003436.php#003436\">InstaPundit<\/a>)<\/small><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Johannesburg Summit on sustainable growth?
