Which means I’m the guy who gets talked to about global annoucements, web sites, and intra- and extramural communiques from IT. Woo-hoo and all that.

So one of the things we’re doing is rolling out a new consolidated web site regarding IT Procurement — how IT folks can purchase hardware and software for their sites. There are standards lists, contact lists for the Purchasing group, forms, and instructions.

Somebody mentioned, a week or two back, that while we’re at it, we should include some information about a directive that the CIO put out at the beginning of the year about how IT folks should go about purchasing Microsoft software. This particular directive will require a lot of extra effort on the part of IT staff and the business ops folks they interface with, but will also provide a much more solid set of data on how much we’re actually spending with Microsoft (long story there), which would indeed be a Good Thing.

The folks who think it would be a good idea think so because nobody’s following the directive.

Well, that’s cool. I can certainly help with that. One of the things I’m here for, eh? Just forward me a copy —

Oh. It was a verbal directive, to the CIO’s direct reports. Which may explain the current problem.

Okay, can anyone describe what exactly the directive said?

[Cue Peanuts Grown-Up Voice]

Uh-huh. Well, that’s interesting. Speaking as a guy who used to have to do that sort of ordering and requisitioning, here are two very common questions that will occur to anyone who has to do this, with what I understand the answers to be. Am I correct in those answers?

Silence. Shrugs. Scuffing feet. Looking at each other.

Well, yeah, I do kinda need to know, because if I communicate this info out there, then if there are any questions, they will come back to me with them.

Silence. Shrugs. Scuffing feet. Looking at each other.

Okay. Can someone touch bases with the CIO to get clarification, or perhaps get something in writing?

Silence. Shrugs. Scuffing feet. Looking at each other.

I don’t know if the problem is (a) nobody thinks these are important questions, (b) nobody wants to ask the CIO because he thinks this has all been settled since January, or (c) nobody wants to ask the CIO because they think it’s an idiotic question, or (d) nobody wants to make a statement about it because then they’ll get all the heat for it.

*sigh*

So. Let me see if I can get some answers. Including, if need be, contacting the CIO.

Before it gets published under my name, either I can answer questions about it, or I should know who can.

(title with apologies to Adam)

I am now (since the re-org, mentioned a while back), the IT Manager in charge of Documentation Services.
