{"id":30452,"date":"2012-10-02T22:11:32","date_gmt":"2012-10-03T04:11:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/?p=30452"},"modified":"2012-10-02T22:11:32","modified_gmt":"2012-10-03T04:11:32","slug":"fatherdaughter-tvpalooza-night-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2012\/10\/02\/fatherdaughter-tvpalooza-night-3.html","title":{"rendered":"Father\/Daughter TVpalooza, Night 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Things got off to a late start tonight, as Les was giving me a guided tour to World of Warcraft (more about which elseblog), so we didn&#8217;t start being glued to the boob tube until 6 or so.<\/p>\n<p>Which limited us to (gasp) two things:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/roger-rabbit.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-30454\" title=\"Roger Rabbit and Eddie Valiant\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/roger-rabbit-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/roger-rabbit-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/roger-rabbit.jpg 431w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Kay: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0096438\/\">Who Framed Roger Rabbit?<\/a><\/em>\u00a0(1988)<\/strong>\u00a0&#8212; I remember when this movie came out, and how astonishing and funny it was.<\/p>\n<p>And it&#8217;s still pretty astonishing and funny, melding live action with traditional 2D animation. And, more importantly, melding Toontown and all it implies with post-War LA. \u00a0It&#8217;s weird and crazy and loony and zany and I just love it. \u00a0Great world-building, mixed with a solid cast and excellent production values.<\/p>\n<p>Deep, profound kudos to the various copyright holders that allowed Mickey, Bugs, Woody, Harvey, and all the other animated figures to all be present. \u00a0Inconceivable today &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/doctor-who_mcgann.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-30453\" title=\"Doctor Who - the Eighth Doctor, Paul McGann\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/doctor-who_mcgann-300x229.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/doctor-who_mcgann-300x229.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/doctor-who_mcgann.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Dave: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Doctor_who_the_movie\">Doctor Who &#8211; The Movie<\/a><\/em> (1996)<\/strong> &#8212; This was the mid-90s attempted revival of The Doctor, a Fox production shot in Vancouver (doubling for San Francisco), with Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor (after we say farewell to Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh).<\/p>\n<p>On the one hand, it sort of feels like a 90s TV movie, especially one meant to rope in an American audience (there&#8217;s a car chase, fergoshsakes, plus kissing). One has to wonder how life (and the franchise) would be different had it done as well, ratings-wise, in the US as it did in the UK. \u00a0McGann&#8217;s Doctor is passionate, occasionally silly, pretty much in keeping with the tradition, and would have done a decent job had the series continued &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; but it&#8217;s difficult to see that we would have gotten the brilliance of the UK resurrection of the franchise.
