{"id":30561,"date":"2012-10-12T10:31:24","date_gmt":"2012-10-12T16:31:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2012\/10\/12\/perhaps-we-should-all-just-go-to-the-er-then.html"},"modified":"2012-10-12T10:31:24","modified_gmt":"2012-10-12T16:31:24","slug":"perhaps-we-should-all-just-go-to-the-er-then","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2012\/10\/12\/perhaps-we-should-all-just-go-to-the-er-then.html","title":{"rendered":"Perhaps we should all just go to the ER, then"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Romney continues to repeat the GOP policy mantra that people don&#39;t die from lack of insurance in this country because, well, they can just go to the ER if they get sick.<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201c[Y]ou go to the hospital, you get treated, you get care, and it\u2019s paid for, either by charity, the government or by the hospital,\u201d Romney said. \u201cWe don\u2019t have people that become ill, who die in their apartment because they don\u2019t have insurance.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Never mind that many of his GOP colleagues have called for eliminating the requirement that ERs provide health care regardless of ability to pay (takers!) or to gut the programs whereby the government pays for treatment (takers!).<\/p>\n<p>The fact is that ERs provide limited, point-of-contact acute care, treating an <i>emergency<\/i>. \u00a0It&#39;s a horrifyingly expensive and inefficient way of dealing with health needs, and completely ignores the plight\u00a0of people with chronic conditions as well as the financial and health benefits of preventative care.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, as has been pointed out by one legislative expert in health care:<\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cThere ought to be enough money to help people get insurance because an insured individual has a better chance of having an excellent medical experience than the one who has not. An insured individual is more likely to go to a primary care physician or a clinic to get evaluated for their conditions and to get early treatment, to get pharmaceutical treatment, as opposed to showing up in the emergency room where the treatment is more expensive and less effective than if they got preventive and primary care.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p>That was Mitt Romney, all of five years ago.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reshared post from +<a href='https:\/\/plus.google.com\/116234824425478706959'>Talking Points Memo<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Mitt Romney says people don\u2019t die because they lack health insurance.
