{"id":30666,"date":"2012-10-17T21:31:15","date_gmt":"2012-10-18T03:31:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2012\/10\/17\/parentteacher-conferences.html"},"modified":"2012-10-18T09:23:56","modified_gmt":"2012-10-18T15:23:56","slug":"parentteacher-conferences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2012\/10\/17\/parentteacher-conferences.html","title":{"rendered":"Parent\/Teacher Conferences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Something really remarkable\u00a0happened this year with Kay&#39;s P\/T conferences for the first quarter.<\/p>\n<p>She&#39;s always gotten good grades and \u00a0reasonable praise from her teachers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This quarter was different.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Instead of praise, we got &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; well &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; <i>effusive<\/i> praise.<\/p>\n<p>Really. Every teacher talked on at length\u00a0about how responsible Kay was, how diligent a student, how good at asking questions, how interested in making sure all her assignments were in, how likable she was, how helpful, all that jazz. \u00a0Respectful. Nice. \u00a0And, pretty much universally, &quot;I wish all my students were like her.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>It was almost a bit &#8230; daunting. \u00a0I don&#39;t think either of us ever got that kind of rave reviews. Not that we were bad students, but, I mean &#8230;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And of course, we&#39;re very proud and appreciative and are telling her all of that, and it&#39;s all very keen. \u00a0And, of course, all of which means, as she approaches the midpoint of her 12th year of age \u00a0&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p>a. We actually have a very special girl who&#39;s been brought up well and will turn out to be a happy, fulfilled, responsible adult.<\/p>\n<p>b. We&#39;ve over-instilled our own internalized shame-driven stress to overachieve and meet the expectations of our superiors to gain their praise and validation, and thus she&#39;ll live in neurotic unhappiness for the rest of her life.<\/p>\n<p>c.
