{"id":30921,"date":"2012-10-29T14:46:17","date_gmt":"2012-10-29T20:46:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2012\/10\/29\/the-new-right-wing-war-on-data.html"},"modified":"2012-11-01T09:18:08","modified_gmt":"2012-11-01T15:18:08","slug":"the-new-right-wing-war-on-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2012\/10\/29\/the-new-right-wing-war-on-data.html","title":{"rendered":"The New Right-Wing War on Data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#39;ve been watching with growing incredulity the escalating series of attacks on Nate Silver of 538 (<a href=\"http:\/\/fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com\" class=\"ot-anchor\">http:\/\/fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com<\/a>), all because he&#39;s refused to go along with the ever-increasing &quot;Ro-mentum&quot; meme from the GOP, and his analysis of aggregate poll data (the basis for which is freely available) doesn&#39;t show the race is running away in Mitt&#39;s favor. In fact, he has the audacity to show Obama as a narrow favorite.<\/p>\n<p>Recently these attacks have evolved from disagreements over how Silver crunches the numbers\u00a0to more deeply cogent and intellectual commentary on Silver &#8230; such as Dean Chambers\u00a0of &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/unskewedpolls.com\" class=\"ot-anchor\">unskewedpolls.com<\/a>&quot; describing Silver this way. <i>&quot;Nate Silver is a man of very small stature, a thin and effeminate man with a soft-sounding voice that sounds almost exactly like the &#39;Mr. New Castrati&#39; voice used by Rush Limbaugh on his program. In fact, Silver could easily be the poster child for the New Castrati in both image and sound.&quot;<\/i> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/article\/the-far-left-turns-to-nate-silver-for-wisdom-on-the-polls\" class=\"ot-anchor\">http:\/\/www.examiner.com\/article\/the-far-left-turns-to-nate-silver-for-wisdom-on-the-polls<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Great example of &quot;unskewed&quot; analysis, Dean!<\/p>\n<p>I would normally simply lean back and let my house professional statistician\u00a0(my wife) defend Silver&#39;s work, but Nate\u00a0managed to do so in an even more entertaining fashion.
