{"id":31261,"date":"2012-11-07T08:48:41","date_gmt":"2012-11-07T15:48:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2012\/11\/07\/considering-the-future-for-the-gop.html"},"modified":"2012-11-07T08:48:41","modified_gmt":"2012-11-07T15:48:41","slug":"considering-the-future-for-the-gop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2012\/11\/07\/considering-the-future-for-the-gop.html","title":{"rendered":"Considering the future for the GOP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last night&#39;s defeat in the presidential campaign &#8212; and in a number of Senate and House campaigns &#8212; drove home a lesson that some in the GOP have been saying, in soft voices, for some time: <i>being the party of white, evangelical Christian\u00a0males is not a long-term demographic winner.<\/i><\/p>\n<p>The question is, how will the party address that? \u00a0I mean, yes, there is a lot of common cause the Republicans <i>could<\/i> make with Hispanics in places like Florida, and Arizona, and Colorado (and even California), things they could do that would cause those states to stay (or flip) red. \u00a0The Hispanic population is (to generalize) very traditional, very family-oriented, and very Catholic, all of which should work to the GOP&#39;s favor.<\/p>\n<p>Except that to that perceived core base in the GOP, those Hispanics are\u00a0a bunch of <i>brown-skinned, Spanish-speaking intruders, who, yeah, the good ones don&#39;t like Castro, but mostly they&#39;re illegal, aren&#39;t they, and even if they aren&#39;t, then they know illegals and protect them, and probably send a lot of our money to drug-dealing relatives in Mexico, and they&#39;re all sneaking in here to have anchor babies,\u00a0and don&#39;t get me started on those weird Catholic idols\u00a0that Pastor Bob was preaching against last Sunday, so let&#39;s see some ID, boy!<\/i><\/p>\n<p>As long as that&#39;s the chin that the Republicans lead with, they will continue to lose. And lose by more and more. \u00a0George W.
