{"id":3234,"date":"2003-01-08T15:03:44","date_gmt":"2003-01-08T20:03:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/?p=3234"},"modified":"2003-01-08T15:03:44","modified_gmt":"2003-01-08T20:03:44","slug":"censor_sequel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2003\/01\/08\/censor_sequel.html","title":{"rendered":"Censor Sequel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2002\/06\/03\/paging_dr_bowdl.html\">last summer<\/a>, folks got up in arms because the New York State Regents exams were bowdlerizing, censoring, altering, and otherwise messing around with the literature excerpts they included in the test.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, they promised vigorously to never do so again, or, if they did, to at least indicate through elipses (&#8230;) where they were cutting material, and with [brackets] where paraphrases were taking place.  <\/p>\n<p>Sort of like we learned in English class.<\/p>\n<p>Problem is, <a title=\"How New York Exams Rewrite Literature (A Sequel)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/01\/08\/education\/08EDUC.html?pagewanted=all&#038;position=top\">they&#8217;re still doing it<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"block\">In new guidelines, the state promised complete paragraphs with no deletions, but an excerpt from Kafka (on the importance of literature) changes his words and removes the middle of a paragraph without using ellipses, in the process deleting mentions of God and suicide.<br \/>\nThe new state guidelines promised not to sanitize, but a passage on people&#8217;s conception of time from Aldous Huxley (a product of England&#8217;s colonial era) deletes the paragraphs on how unpunctual &#8220;the Oriental&#8221; is.<\/p>\n<p>They also failed to note author names, as they had promised to, and messed up a passage on the Influenza Epidemic of 1918 such that it plausibly has multiple answers that are correct &#8212; though the state still thinks that only one of them is &#8220;clearly&#8221; correct.<\/p>\n<p>The state denies there&#8217;s anything wrong with what they did, by the way, arguing that &#8220;sensitive&#8221; material was cut for length, that unmarked cuts took place in passages marked as &#8220;adapted,&#8221; and a section that quoted multiple writers was mushed into a single narrative because it would have been too confusing.<\/p>\n<p>Riiiiiiight.<\/p>\n<p>And these are the folks who are deciding whether the <i>students <\/i>are academically strong enough to pass.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, last summer, folks got up in arms because the New York State Regents exams were bowdlerizing, censoring, altering, and otherwise messing around with the literature excerpts they included in&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_seopress_titles_title":"","_seopress_titles_desc":"","_seopress_robots_index":"","_seopress_robots_follow":"","_seopress_robots_imageindex":"","_seopress_robots_snippet":"","_seopress_robots_primary_cat":"","_seopress_robots_breadcrumbs":"","_seopress_robots_freeze_modified_date":"","_seopress_robots_custom_modified_date":"","_seopress_robots_canonical":"","_seopress_social_fb_title":"","_seopress_social_fb_desc":"","_seopress_social_fb_img":"","_seopress_social_fb_img_attachment_id":0,"_seopress_social_fb_img_width":0,"_seopress_social_fb_img_height":0,"_seopress_social_twitter_title":"","_seopress_social_twitter_desc":"","_seopress_social_twitter_img":"","_seopress_social_twitter_img_attachment_id":0,"_seopress_social_twitter_img_width":0,"_seopress_social_twitter_img_height":0,"_seopress_redirections_value":"","_seopress_redirections_enabled":"","_seopress_redirections_enabled_regex":"","_seopress_redirections_logged_status":"","_seopress_redirections_param":"","_seopress_redirections_type":0,"_seopress_analysis_target_kw":"","_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[8],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3234","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-zt-pc"],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"jetpack-related-posts":[{"id":2576,"url":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2002\/06\/03\/paging_dr_bowdl.html","url_meta":{"origin":3234,"position":0},"title":"Paging Dr. Bowdler &#8230;","author":"***Dave","date":"Mon 3-Jun-02 10:00am","format":false,"excerpt":"The New York State Regents exam, which is required for all high school students in order to graduate, includes essay questions based on excerpts from literature.
