{"id":3272,"date":"2003-01-02T14:22:37","date_gmt":"2003-01-02T19:22:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/?p=3272"},"modified":"2003-01-02T14:22:37","modified_gmt":"2003-01-02T19:22:37","slug":"losing_their_ma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2003\/01\/02\/losing_their_ma.html","title":{"rendered":"Losing their marbles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since it&#8217;s much more likely that I&#8217;ll visit London than Athens, I&#8217;m selfishly in favor of the British Museum retaining the Elgin Marbles, which Lord Elgin kinda-sorta-legally removed from the Parthenon back in the 18th Century.  <\/p>\n<p>But the comments of the British museum&#8217;s new director, Neil MacGregor, are more than a bit, ah, <a title=\"BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Arts | Elgin Marbles make 'virtual' return\" href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/entertainment\/arts\/2621153.stm\">goofy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"block\">&#8220;Works of art of this level belong to humanity. The context of a universal museum is one that is of great value.&#8221; <br \/>\nHe said it was &#8220;very disturbing&#8221;, &#8220;anti-world&#8221; and &#8220;worryingly nationalistic&#8221; of countries who wanted to reclaim what they had made.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s right.  How &#8220;anti-world&#8221; it is for the Greeks to think that the Elgin Marbles should be in <i>their <\/i>part of the world rather than Mr. MacGregor&#8217;s part of the world.  How &#8220;worryingly nationalistic&#8221; that they wouldn&#8217;t be in the <i>British <\/i>Museum &#8212; unless he&#8217;s going to have it renamed the &#8220;Universal Museum,&#8221; of course &#8230; or else put them on a traveling display around the world.<\/p>\n<p>If the Brits want to keep them, fine.
