If the NYPD and their mayor have their way, nobody. Because, of course, the police are always trustworthy and never, ever do anything wrong, and, besides, while knowing you're being watched all the time is a Good Thing for the general populace because it keeps them from doing bad things, it's a Bad Thing for the police because it will keep them from doing good things.<\/p>\n

New York Mayor and police suddenly don't love surveillance anymore when it's pointed at them.<\/b><\/p>\n

Writing for Salon, columnist +<\/span>David Sirota<\/a><\/span> points out why the New York Police Department, it's mayor, Michael Bloomberg and New York City police commissioner Raymond Kelly, are a bunch of\u00a0hypocrites.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They love<\/i> surveillance. They strongly advocate a stop-and-frisk policy (a direct violation of the 4th Amendment). They want\u00a0surveillance\u00a0cameras on every corner. And they even want a fleet of police drones flying over New York.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They love surveilling everyone else. But now a proposal is being floated to appoint an independent monitor to watch the police, they're completely against it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

They want to watch us, but don't want us watching them.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And their reason is the same reason all Big Brother wanna-bes cite — public safety!\u00a0<\/p>\n

I agree with Sirota. And it's why I advocated the right for citizens to film, record and monitor the police anytime they're doing so to us.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If we're going to have a surveillance society, then let's have a surveillance society:\u00a0<\/p>\n
