When I hear GOP congresscritters loudly avowing, with apparent sincerity, that "Benghazigate" is bigger than Watergate, bigger than Iran-Contra, bigger than 9\/11 … then I despair for this country.<\/p>\n

I mean, even if one assumes that there was some big bungle and a cover-up to boot — neither of which assertion is anywhere near a certainty — then we're talking something that's a serious\u00a0embarrassment, a blemish on history, a failure that will be mentioned in the history of this administration … but that's about it.<\/p>\n

But it seems to me that hyperbole has ceased to mean anything in Washington. And we've graduated from silly accusations of fascism and resemblances to the Third Reich to downright shameless, if not simply crackers, comparisons to profound tragedies, lengthy and systemic wrongdoings, and attempts to subvert the electoral process of our democracy. \u00a0<\/p>\n

That Watergate, Iran-Contra, and 9\/11 all took place under Republican administrations has, I'm sure, nothing to do with it.<\/p>\n
