While the temptation is to wholeheartedly encourage the GOP to pursue \u00a0Phyllis Schlafly's advice to the hilt, which would surely drive them into obscurity if not extinction, the fact is I want<\/i> a vibrant, thriving, more inclusive Republican party, in opposition to the Dems and encouraging the latter to be able to shift further Left. And that includes dropping the nativist rhetoric and embrace that this country is not made of WASPs any more.<\/p>\n

'Calling the GOP\u2019s need to reach out to Latinos a \u201cgreat myth,\u201d Schlafly said that \u201cthe people the Republicans should reach out to are the white votes, the white voters who didn\u2019t vote in the last election.\u201d […] \u201cThe propagandists are leading us down the wrong path,\u201d she said. \u201cThere\u2019s not any evidence at all that these Hispanics coming in from Mexico will vote Republican.\u201d'<\/i><\/p>\n

That's going to be a problem for you, isn't it, Ms. Schlafly. And certainly they won't if you keep complaining that all those immigrants are just coming from other countries expecting hand-outs.<\/p>\n

Of course, while Schlafly's view of the future is a bit murky, her view of the past is no better.<\/p>\n

'Last week, she lamented that today\u2019s immigrants are less patriotic than the \u201cIrish, Italian, Jewish, etc.\u201d immigrants of \u201cearlier generations.\u201d'<\/i><\/p>\n

Funny thing is, the WASP establishment and the Republicans were pretty upset about all those immigrants, too, thinking them uncultured threats to American society. \u00a0As a result, they voted Democrat for a long time, too.<\/p><\/div>\n
