{"id":3745,"date":"2003-04-03T10:58:44","date_gmt":"2003-04-03T15:58:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/?p=3745"},"modified":"2003-04-03T10:58:44","modified_gmt":"2003-04-03T15:58:44","slug":"eek_2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2003\/04\/03\/eek_2.html","title":{"rendered":"Eek"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I may <a title=\"BBC NEWS | Science\/Nature | Super squid surfaces in Antarctic\" href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/science\/nature\/2910849.stm\">never go back in the ocean again<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"block\">&#8220;It&#8217;s only half to two-thirds grown, so it grows up to four metres in mantle length.&#8221; By comparison, the mantle of the giant squid, <i>Architeuthis dux<\/i>, is not known to attain more than 2.25 metres. <br \/>\nThe squid researchers are calling <i>Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni <\/i>the &#8220;colossal squid&#8221;. &#8220;We&#8217;d like to give this animal the name colossal squid in order to have a common name for it as opposed to just the scientific name,&#8221; said Kat Bolstad, research associate at Auckland University of Technology. &#8220;We feel that colossal conveys both the size and the aggressiveness of the animal. <br \/>\n&#8220;This animal, armed as it is with the hooks and the beak that it has, not only is colossal in size but is going to be a phenomenal predator and something you are not going to want to meet in the water.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hmmm.
