{"id":3749,"date":"2003-04-02T13:02:11","date_gmt":"2003-04-02T18:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/?p=3749"},"modified":"2003-04-02T13:02:11","modified_gmt":"2003-04-02T18:02:11","slug":"whistling_dixie","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2003\/04\/02\/whistling_dixie.html","title":{"rendered":"Whistling Dixie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t get it.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, was it a <a href=\"http:\/\/launch.yahoo.com\/read\/news.asp?contentID=212841\">slow news day<\/a>, or did Al just get around to reading last week&#8217;s <i>Time <\/i>or something?  <\/p>\n<p class=\"block\">According to the <i>Tennessean<\/i>, Gore used recent attacks on the Dixie Chicks that followed anti-war comments by Natalie Maines as an example. Gore told the audience, &#8220;They were made to feel un-American and risked economic retaliation because of what was said. Our democracy has taken a hit,&#8221; Gore said. &#8220;Our best protection is free and open debate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So the DCs (or a member thereof) saying they&#8217;re ashamed that Dubya is from Texas is &#8220;free and open debate,&#8221; but someone saying that they think the DCs are doofuses is &#8220;making them feel un-American&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>And given that the only reason anyone cares about, or heard, the DCs&#8217; statement is because of their economically-lucrative celebrity (i.e., people like things they&#8217;ve done in the past), why should that not be at stake when they make use of that celebrity (and do things that people dislike)?<\/p>\n<p>I mean, it would be nice if people were able to separate art from the artist, but if I as an artist insist on insinuating myself into realms <i>outside <\/i>my art, it seems to me fair game for others to express dissenting opinions.
