{"id":37663,"date":"2013-06-07T15:06:58","date_gmt":"2013-06-07T21:06:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/07\/tax-revolting.html"},"modified":"2013-06-10T06:25:28","modified_gmt":"2013-06-10T12:25:28","slug":"tax-revolting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2013\/06\/07\/tax-revolting.html","title":{"rendered":"Tax Revolting"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"gpb-content\">I was in California when Prop 13 passed, and just old enough to be aware of its immediate and dire impact on schools, libraries, all sorts of things. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>My mom notes\u00a0that something had to be done with property taxes, given how rapidly rising property values were forcing people out of their homes due to property tax increases, and I&#39;m sure there&#39;s a lot of value in that assessment (so to speak). \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Prop 13&#39;s draconian limits on property taxes, taxation in general, and the various &quot;unintended consequences&quot; that resulted from it (like corporations steadily lowering their share of the tax burden) make it more than clear that it was an overreach of the highest degree, and a key contributor to California&#39;s (and the cities and counties therein) financial problems ever since.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#39;s hoping that one day Howard Jarvis is only known for his brief, but amusing, role in <i>Airplane.<\/i><\/div>\n<p class='gpb-article' style='clear:both;'>\n<div style='height:120px;width:120px;overflow:hidden;float:left;margin-top:0px;padding-top:0px;margin-right:10px;vertical-align:top;text-align:center;clear:both;'>\n                                                    <img style='max-width:none;' src='https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/proxy\/HbClxSvhpm0gmJb1M2Y-X0WawSp2WURtRrQDgoNA90CBL65uassgQpeOBIF3ycgdlvNS9G-HC-O4ToQ2uadJNq0ug1fJuccMA_FqPzY_=w125-h125' border='0' \/>\n                                                <\/div>\n<p>                                                <a href='http:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/kevin-drum\/2013\/06\/tax-revolt-35th-anniversary-prop-13-california'>Happy 35th Birthday, Tax Revolt!
