{"id":380,"date":"2003-04-25T11:02:27","date_gmt":"2003-04-25T16:02:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/?p=380"},"modified":"2003-04-25T11:02:27","modified_gmt":"2003-04-25T16:02:27","slug":"take_two_tablet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2003\/04\/25\/take_two_tablet.html","title":{"rendered":"Take two tablets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve done a similar analysis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2002\/02\/03\/dont_know_much_1.html\">before<\/a>, but Eugene Volokh makes the point as well that the Ten Commandments is a <a title=\"The Volokh Conspiracy\" href=\"http:\/\/volokh.blogspot.com\/2003_04_20_volokh_archive.html#200195975\">sketchy foundation<\/a> for our civil law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"block\">  All this is an illustration, I think, of a basic point: Even if one thinks that the Bible is a proper source of legal guidance, a Biblical prohibition of something <b>is not itself a sufficient reason for secular law to prohibit it, too <\/b>&#8212; as even many of the Commandments (which some say are among the most fundamental of the Biblical rules) demonstrate. There still has to be a second step of the argument: Not just that the Bible prohibits it, but that <b>this prohibition is also one of the rules that should be imposed by secular law as well as religious law, as opposed to one of the many rules that should only be imposed by religious law<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>(Emphasis his.)<\/p>\n<p>I, for one, am not particularly interested in a <i>civil <\/i>law that would imprison or fine me for working on a Sunday, or being disrespectful to my folks, or expresing covetous thoughts or actions.
