{"id":38147,"date":"2013-07-05T12:33:35","date_gmt":"2013-07-05T18:33:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/05\/when-good-correspondents-go-bad.html"},"modified":"2013-07-05T17:53:48","modified_gmt":"2013-07-05T23:53:48","slug":"when-good-correspondents-go-bad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/05\/when-good-correspondents-go-bad.html","title":{"rendered":"When good correspondents go bad"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"gpb-content\">We all have correspondents &#8212; friends, family, colleagues, old and new &#8212; who over time seem to lapse into partisan lunacy (I&#39;m being non-partisan here, since I&#39;m sure it happens toward all extremes, though I&#39;m not nearly so sure that it&#39;s evenly balanced, or unbalanced as the case may be). \u00a0They start sending out chain letters and memes and links and forwarded-reforwarded-reshared-retweeted-recopied bits of political doggerel, nearly always misattributed to someone else, almost always in desperate need of fact-checking.<\/p>\n<p>What do you do? \u00a0Ignore it? Ask to be taken off the list? \u00a0Spend the time and effort to research and refute the crap out of it and send said results back to the original sender? \u00a0Or to the sender and all the others who received it? \u00a0It depends, ultimately, on what you want your future relationship to be with that person, vs. what harm perhaps you think they doing to the rest of society (not to mention your mental ear drums).<\/p>\n<p>Speaking truth to idiocy has a cost. \u00a0But speaking truth almost always does. And it has a benefit, too.
