{"id":38151,"date":"2013-07-05T16:20:06","date_gmt":"2013-07-05T22:20:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/05\/end-of-a-family-era.html"},"modified":"2013-07-05T17:55:44","modified_gmt":"2013-07-05T23:55:44","slug":"end-of-a-family-era","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/05\/end-of-a-family-era.html","title":{"rendered":"End of a Family Era"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"gpb-content\">My Uncle Al passed away this week. \u00a0He was actually my Great-Uncle, the last of my Nona&#39;s many brothers. \u00a0We weren&#39;t what I&#39;d call close, but we exchanged cards each Christmas, handshakes and hugs whenever we met (sadly, most recently, as other family members of that era\u00a0passed away), and he was family.<\/p>\n<p>Oddly, one of my clearest memories of Uncle Al was at a milestone birthday for my bisnonna (great-grandmother, the Marianna mentioned below), when I was fairly young. The brothers were all jokers to one degree or another, and it was Al who suggested I smell the lovely frosting rose on Bis Nona&#39;s birthday cake. \u00a0Hilarity (and a frosting facial) ensued. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&#39;s funny how little I knew about him, aside from his presence. \u00a0He was a lumberjack? He served on the USS <i>Wayne<\/i> (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_Wayne_(APA-54)\" class=\"ot-anchor\" rel=\"nofollow\">http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USS_Wayne_(APA-54)<\/a> )? All things I didn&#39;t know, or, if I knew, never rose above the level of background noise I didn&#39;t really consider. \u00a0He was my Uncle Al &#8212; that was enough.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It&#39;s very strange, even a little disconcerting, to think of that generation of immediate family now being gone.
