{"id":38234,"date":"2013-07-11T14:30:15","date_gmt":"2013-07-11T20:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/11\/farm-bills-and-food-bills.html"},"modified":"2013-07-16T09:39:37","modified_gmt":"2013-07-16T15:39:37","slug":"farm-bills-and-food-bills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2013\/07\/11\/farm-bills-and-food-bills.html","title":{"rendered":"Farm Bills and Food Bills"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"gpb-content\">Up front, I will say that I would rather see SNAP (Food Stamps) dealt with separately from the Farm Bill, if only because it&#39;s a lot more tidy that way. \u00a0Each requires its own separate debate, and agriculture policy should not be held hostage to socal net policy (and vice-versa).<\/p>\n<p>Except, of course, sometimes that hostage taking is necessary to get any sort of action. \u00a0Hence the GOP&#39;s passage in the House of a Farm Bill that doesn&#39;t include <i>any<\/i> SNAP funding &#8230; with a promise to raise it in a separate bill later. \u00a0Which (unless they&#39;re willing to buy a pig in a poke) the Senate Democrats will refuse to pass, or only pass with SNAP funding put back in.<\/p>\n<p>Since that&#39;s the contentious part of all this, a desire to deal with the matter <i>rationally<\/i> would have had the GOP passing a SNAP bill (doubtless with major cuts), and then start to work on a Farm Bill.
