In discussing violence against women in comics, some recent responses by comic book creators is that, well, it's no different than the bad guys being violent in general — that rape is much the same as decapitation (though, presumably, you don't get a lot of survivors having to live with the aftermath of decapitation).<\/p>\n

But is taboo-breaking violence the only (or even best) way to define a villain? \u00a0I think not, in many if not most cases.<\/p><\/div>\n

Do villains have to commit “taboo” acts for us to hate them?<\/a>
\n Do villains need to rape, torture or mutilate people for us to hate them? Or maybe the reverse is true: Sometimes we can invest more in a villain, if his or her evildoing is creative and leaves more to our imaginations. Sometimes with villains, brutality is the lesser path. Here’s our plea for more subtle monsters.\n <\/p>\n
