{"id":38566,"date":"2013-08-26T07:04:35","date_gmt":"2013-08-26T13:04:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2013\/08\/26\/lobo-from-ridiculous-to-ridiculous.html"},"modified":"2013-08-26T07:04:35","modified_gmt":"2013-08-26T13:04:35","slug":"lobo-from-ridiculous-to-ridiculous","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2013\/08\/26\/lobo-from-ridiculous-to-ridiculous.html","title":{"rendered":"Lobo, from Ridiculous to Ridiculous"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"gpb-content\">When it comes to comics, I have never been a Lobo fan. \u00a0Indeed, I tend to find that kind of self-mocking over-the-top humor (whether it&#39;s Lobo, or Deadpool, or even Ambush Bug) to be more than a bit irksome except in small doses. \u00a0Which is why, of course, when certain characters show they&#39;re popular in those small doses, and suddenly become big hits (mini-series! full series! major roles in cross-overs! character XYZ month!), it drive me bats.<\/p>\n<p>The new Lobo in DC Comics (who&#39;s not the new Lobo we ostensibly have been seeing in the New 52 to date, for the five of you still following <i>Stormwatch)<\/i> has one thing going for him: he&#39;s not the old, classic, &quot;Main Man,&quot; genocidal biker with a charmingly bullying attitude and a penchant for space dolphins. \u00a0Instead, he&#39;s &#8212; well, he&#39;s grim. He&#39;s gritty. He&#39;s humorless. He&#39;s sleek and dark and pretty and deadly and pretty deadly and &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Wow. He&#39;s really boring and cookie-cutter-template-looking. \u00a0Especially given everyone in the DC Universe these days. \u00a0He even has a high collar. And his MO doesn&#39;t really sound all that bold and innovative, either. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ho-hum. I&#39;m not exactly bursting into tears and traumatized by the idea that DC is changing the Lobo character &#8212; but I am far from impressed by the idea that in deciding to do so they\u00a0came up with such a wildly generic and \u00a0uninspiring character in doing so.<\/p>\n<p>(Oh, and Ben Affleck as Batman? Not wowed by the idea, not terrified or infuriated.
