Even among those who conveniently wave around Reagan&#39;s name as their ideological leader and inspiration.<\/p>\n<p>Letter from President Ronald Reagan to Howard Baker, Senate Majority Leader, on the need to raise the debt ceiling (16 Nov 1983):<\/p>\n<p><i>&#39;This country now possesses the strongest credit in the world. Th full consequences of a default &#8212; or even the serious prospect of a default &#8212; by the United States are impossible to predict and awesome to contemplate. Denigration of the full faith and credit of the United States would have substantial effects on the domestic financial markets and on the value of the dollar in exchange markets. \u00a0The Nation can ill afford to allow such a result.
