'Less than an hour before the funding deadline, House Republicans were set to formally request a bicameral committee late Monday evening to hash out some middle ground between the Democratic Senate's "clean" government funding bill and the GOP-led House's proposal to delay a key part of Obamacare and nix health care subsidies for congressional staffers.<\/i><\/p>\n

"It means we're the reasonable, responsible actors trying to keep the process alive as the clock ticks past midnight, despite Washington Democrats' refusal – thus far – to negotiate," the GOP aide said. '<\/i><\/p>\n

Hostage-takers\u00a0aren't "reasonable and responsible," even if they decide it's okay for everyone in the room to sit down while they still hold a gun to the hostage's head. The GOP's basic proposition — Give us everything we want or we cause massive damage to the economy and harm people dependent on the federal government<\/i> — doesn't suddenly become"middle ground"\u00a0if they change everything<\/i> to some things.<\/i><\/div>\n
