{"id":39574,"date":"2013-11-05T09:55:46","date_gmt":"2013-11-05T16:55:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2013\/11\/05\/a-voting-holiday.html"},"modified":"2013-11-06T07:31:21","modified_gmt":"2013-11-06T14:31:21","slug":"a-voting-holiday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2013\/11\/05\/a-voting-holiday.html","title":{"rendered":"A Voting Holiday"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"gpb-content\">It strikes me as odd that Election Day* is not a paid national holiday.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, really &#8212; it&#39;s at least as important, as a civil society, as the other &quot;national \u00a0holiday&quot; dates. \u00a0And providing it as a holiday would remove a lot of the brouhaha over early voting and polling place hours and the like.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, if there really is an effort to restrain voting, especially voting by\u00a0folks for whom getting to the polls during a working day is non-trivial, then it&#39;s obvious why this idea has never and will never get any traction. Let alone the &quot;It will hurt small businesses and reduce profits and make our economy all higgledy-piggledy&quot; fearmongering.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This actually came up in a conversation with my daughter last evening.
