It strikes me as odd that Election Day* is not a paid national holiday.<\/p>\n

I mean, really — it's at least as important, as a civil society, as the other "national \u00a0holiday" dates. \u00a0And providing it as a holiday would remove a lot of the brouhaha over early voting and polling place hours and the like.<\/p>\n

Of course, if there really is an effort to restrain voting, especially voting by\u00a0folks for whom getting to the polls during a working day is non-trivial, then it's obvious why this idea has never and will never get any traction. Let alone the "It will hurt small businesses and reduce profits and make our economy all higgledy-piggledy" fearmongering.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This actually came up in a conversation with my daughter last evening. And except for "it will cost some people some money," I couldn't think of a single reason not to do it, except that giving everyone the opportunity to vote is not high on enough people's priority lists.<\/p>\n
