When someone complements you, do you usually accept it, or suggest that you don’t really deserve it?

Once upon a time, I was really bad about turning down complements, whether or not I thought they were deserved. I think I learned (too late) that being overly enthusiastic about what a keen fellow you are does not endear you to others. I try now to genuinely accept complements with thanks and humility, and even a little surprise — I do tend to throw off a “de nada,” though, if it seems something that I should have done.

2. Would you rather be overdressed for a social occasion (a party, let’s say), or underdressed? You can always dress back down — remove a coat, remove a tie, whatever. It’s hard to dress back up.

3. A cop pulls you over, and is going to write you a $100 speeding ticket. If he indicated that if you slipped him $50 in cash, he’d give you a pass, would you do so? Would it make any difference whether you’d actually been speeding or not? I’d probably be more upset if I hadn’t actually been speeding (though I rarely go below the speed limit, so not much chance of that). I would probably pay the full fine — I’ve no desire to encourage corruption, or get caught by a sting operation, or do anything other than get back on the road.

Then there’s the Thursday Threesome:

Onesome: Cold Are you a cold weather person and just deal with it or do you prefer temperatures closer to the century mark? I’d much rather trend cold. It’s easy to bundle up; less so to strip down. The only thing I dislike about the cold is icy roads.

Twosome: and Misty What makes you misty-eyed? Do you cry at Hallmark commercials or get all sentimental when you hear a specific song? You can tell us, we won’t laugh 😉 I reliably get snuffly at the end of Willow, when he and Kaya hug.

Threesome: Morning Mornings? …or evenings? Which is your time of the day? Are you up with the sun or do you help the moon keep the night lit? I am a night person by nature. Really. I’d much rather stay up until the not-so-wee hours, and sleep in until 11. Unfortunately, I get up at 5 for work purposes, and Katherine makes it unlikely I’ll stay down until beyond 8 on any given weekday morning, so my evening activities are perforce curtailed.

And, lastly, the 3xThursday.

1. What is the last book you read? What did you think about it? Last new book I completed was Gaiman’s Neverwhere, which I think is the bee’s knees, especially if you’ve ever travelled about London. Very modern-mythic in that way that Gaiman has.

2. What were the last three books that you bought? I have a $20 gift check to BN.com. What should I get? Aside from the above, the last three books I bought were Sharpe’s Tigers (not yet read), The Last Legion (by Sten‘s Chris Bunch), and The Book of Athyra (by Steven Brust, since I can’t find my original Athyra paperback).

3. Have you ever read any books that changed your life? Lord of the Rings, almost certainly, in terms of getting hooked on fantasy. Various of C.S. Lewis’ apologetics. Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning.

"_seopress_social_twitter_img_attachment_id":0
"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[382,32

post-3958","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-lord-of-the-rings","category-personal-qa
If you have to throw yourself on a grenade, it's always nice when your boss complements you on how nicely you did so....
While the picture looks like some sort of electron-microscopic view of some interesting metallic material, it's actually the Encke Gap in Saturn's rings, picture complements of Cassini.
