Okay, I admit that the thought of the person next to me nattering away on their mobile all during a flight is an unpleasant one. And I am all in favor of glowering, loud chatting with the other person on the row, or "accidentally" spilling your drink on an intemperate cell phone user's lap as legitimate forms of social protest.<\/p>\n

But I really don't see that it's the Department of Transportation's job to make people be polite<\/i> to each other. \u00a0This isn't about safety. It's about enforcing some sort of convenient social more. \u00a0That's not what I want the DoT focusing on.<\/p>\n

Transportation Department to consider banning cell phone calls on planes<\/b><\/p>\n

+<\/span>POLITICO<\/a><\/span>: The U.S. Department of Transportation will consider banning cell phone calls during flights after recent outcry over an FCC proposal to loosen restrictions.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe USDOT\u2019s role, as part of our Aviation Consumer Protection Authority, is to determine if allowing these calls is fair to consumers. USDOT will now begin a process that will look at the possibility of banning these in-flight calls,\u201d Secretary Anthony Foxx said in a statement emailed to POLITICO.<\/p>\n

The FCC announced last month it is considering allowing in-flight cell phone calls.<\/p>\n
