Why do we (in the US, at least) pronounce "colonel" as "kernal"? \u00a0Because, more or less, it used to be spelled that way …<\/p>\n

(Which calls to mind one of the funniest lines from the old "Tick" cartoon, when the Tick and Arthur were pretending to be part of El Seed's corn army. They were asked, "What sort of corn soldiers are you?" To which Arthur, of course, replied, "We're colonels." Always makes me laugh.)<\/p>\n
