{"id":41241,"date":"2014-02-28T14:17:43","date_gmt":"2014-02-28T21:17:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2014\/02\/28\/race-perception-changes-by-circumstance.html"},"modified":"2014-03-03T10:05:35","modified_gmt":"2014-03-03T17:05:35","slug":"race-perception-changes-by-circumstance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2014\/02\/28\/race-perception-changes-by-circumstance.html","title":{"rendered":"Race perception changes by circumstance"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"gpb-content\">&quot;Race&quot; is a social construct to begin with, and what race you perceive yourself as, or others perceive you as, is subject to a variety of rules over time and space.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently economic and other social circumstances can affect what race people see you as, too. \u00a0Which is fascinating, illuminating, and more than a bit disappointing.<\/p>\n<p><i>&#39;Saperstein, along with researchers Andrew Penner and Jessica Kizer, pored through thousands of surveys from the Bureau of Labor Statistic\u2019s National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, which tracks its participants for several years. What Saperstein found from the responses was that \u201cIf someone went from being employed to being unemployed, or being out of prison to being in prison, or being off welfare to being on welfare, the interviewer was more likely to see the person as black \u2013 after they experienced that sort of downward mobility \u2013 than before.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Saperstein found the same trends across other races \u2014 people who died from liver failure were more likely to be listed as Native American on the coroner\u2019s report, even if the family indicated another race.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>&#39;[&#8230;] \u201cOne fascinating thing that Saperstein has found is that it isn\u2019t just other people\u2019s perceptions of you that change, Vendanta added. \u201cThe survey that she followed also asked people to report their own race. And she found that when people went to prison, they became more likely to think of themselves as black.
