This is very cool stuff, not only in seeing what names you can reliably associate with a given age range, but, in practically applying that, what are good names to use when writing a story written in a fairly recent era to fit with the age of the person you're writing about.<\/p>\n

And here's some fun statistical analysis to round out your week. You've probably seen tables of popular children's names; here Nate Silver and Alison McCann invert that and combine it with actuarial tables to let you go the other way round, and see which names tell you the most about people's ages. Unsurprisingly, Elmer and Gertrude are fairly strong predictors of being in your 80's at least. Interestingly, though, several of the names on the women's "deadest" list (names the highest proportion of whose bearers are already dead) seem like they might make a comeback: I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Viola make a comeback, for example. (That's not entirely surprising, of course, since especially lately it's been quite common for names to come back into vogue as their last bearers vanish, and so they stop seeming so "old;" vide<\/i> Emma, Abigail, Wyatt, and Isaiah, names which ten years ago you would have associated with a nursing home rather than a nursery) <\/p>\n

That said, I am highly unlikely to ever name a kid Beulah. A foal or calf, maybe, but not a kid. <\/p>\n
