Peter Capaldi interviewed today by The\u00a0Sunday Times<\/b><\/p>\n

Capaldi admitted that despite being a life-long fan, he needed to be convinced before accepting the role: \u201cI didn't want to be Doctor Who in a Doctor Who I didn't like. I had to be convinced the show was going in a direction I was interested in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking on the relationship between the Doctor and Clara, he said: \u201cThere'll be no flirting, that\u2019s for sure. It\u2019s not what this Doctor\u2019s concerned with. It\u2019s quite a fun relationship, but no. I did call and say, \u2018I want no Papa-Nicole moments.\u2019 I think there was a bit of tension with that at first, but I was absolutely adamant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Capaldi said that deciding on an outfit for the Twelfth Doctor to wear took a long time: \u201cI tried on everything anybody suggested. We'd go to a costume house and have huge, exhausting sessions of getting dressed up. It\u2019s fine for about 15 minutes, but by the time we've done 3.5 hours, it\u2019s like, get me out of this. The most ridiculous outfit, the one I loved, I looked like Count Arthur Strong with a real, old cardigan.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s quite a hard look,\u201d he said of the costume they finally settled on. \u201cI always wanted him to be in black – I always just saw the Doctor in dark colours. Not tweed. Matt\u2019s a really young cool guy – he can wear anything, but I wanted to strip it back and be very stark.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to respond to criticisms that recent stories have become too \u2018over the top\u2019: \u201cWe still blow a lot of shit up. That\u2019s very important, but it\u2019s going to be a bit different from what we've seen over recent years. A bit more gravity.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome situations are more sombre and I think there are more rooted dramatic scenes. Over the past two or three years, which I've loved, there has often been a breathless vigour; we still have that attack, but we have another level of drama, another tone. And the scenes are longer.\u201d<\/p>\n
