{"id":4401,"date":"2003-09-09T20:05:29","date_gmt":"2003-09-10T03:05:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/?p=4401"},"modified":"2014-11-10T11:51:03","modified_gmt":"2014-11-10T18:51:03","slug":"rat_bastards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2003\/09\/09\/rat_bastards.html","title":{"rendered":"Rat bastards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Disney has figured out how to avoid the revenue-endangering permanence of DVDs:  <a title=\"Disney unveils DVDs that self-destruct in 48 hours - Sep. 9, 2003\" href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/2003\/09\/09\/technology\/disney_dvd.reut\/index.htm?cnn=yes\">DVDs that self-destruct<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"block\">The red DVDs turn an unreadable black 48 hours after their packages are opened &#8212; exposing them to oxygen, which reacts with the disc in a process similar to how Polaroid film develops. <br \/>\nThe DVDs, which are being distributed by Buena Vista Home Entertainment, Disney&#8217;s home video unit, will carry a suggested price of $6.99.  Some retailers are expected to sell them for as little as about $5, said Alan Blaustein, chief executive of Flexplay, which owns the self-destruct technology. <br \/>\nThe advantage to the disposable DVD format &#8212; known as EZ-D &#8212; is that such discs can be sold anywhere and never need to be returned, potentially turning any retailer into a competitor with video rental chains such as Blockbuster Inc.<\/p>\n<p>Hrm.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, upon another thirty seconds of consideration, I can go for this.  There are a number of movies I&#8217;m interested in seeing, but I hate doing rentals, and I don&#8217;t want to shell out $20 for the disc.
