{"id":4443,"date":"2003-09-02T19:40:24","date_gmt":"2003-09-03T02:40:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/?p=4443"},"modified":"2003-09-02T19:40:24","modified_gmt":"2003-09-03T02:40:24","slug":"holy_roller","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2003\/09\/02\/holy_roller.html","title":{"rendered":"Holy Roller!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Roller Coaster\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/rollercoaster.jpg\" width=\"184\" height=\"229\" border=\"0\" class=\"right\" \/>It can imitate any roller coaster move, and do some that it can&#8217;t, and it can even let you decide on what moves you want it to throw you through.  So why doesn&#8217;t this <a title=\"Taking Roller Coaster Limits for a Ride\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/08\/28\/technology\/circuits\/28roll.html\">robotic roller coaster<\/a> give me a thrill, at least in concept?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe I&#8217;m too tied to actual idea of roller coaster cars moving.  Maybe the anticipation of where you&#8217;re going to go next, seeing the track ahead, knowing your stuck with it (and being able to brace for it) has some old-fashioned charm for me.<\/p>\n<p>True &#8212; it&#8217;s a lot less land-intensive.  But, then, I&#8217;m not sure that the physical presence of a roller coaster isn&#8217;t part of the fun. This just seems too much like a <i>Star Tours<\/i>-style &#8220;roller coaster in a box&#8221; sort of thing.<\/p>\n<p>It also seems like it would be really easy to get violently ill on it.
