While I can't say that the London Met itself has ever fully adhered to the principles listed at the end, they seem like an awfully good idea to me. \u00a0To wit: Police are most effective when they actively seek the support of the public<\/i>\u00a0<\/p>\n

There are likely to be exceptions of the moment. But when it comes to broad policy or even tactics that allow for some consideration before using them, the question of how to build trust and rapport with the community in question should always play a major role in police decisions. When that doesn't happen, we get the last week in Ferguson, MO.<\/p>\n

(To keep that British theme, here some additional interesting statistics comparing US vs UK police shootings:\u00a0http:\/\/fivethirtyeight.com\/datalab\/police-in-england-and-wales-went-two-years-without-fatally-shooting-someone\/<\/a>; it's obvious, of course, that there's a difference between the US and the UK, but I wonder how much of that difference is amenable to change.)\ufeff<\/div>\n
