During our Grand Junction jaunt Labor Day weekend, we drove through Colorado National Monument (http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/colm\/index.htm<\/a>), which is a geological wonderland. It was established in 1911 by proclamation by President Taft.<\/p>\n

There's been discussion about upgrading it to National Park status (http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/06\/17\/us\/debating-if-colorado-national-monument-should-be-a-national-park.html<\/a>), but anti-gubbiment concerns and folk who don't want more people to know about "their" monument have put the kibosh on that for the time being (http:\/\/www.denverpost.com\/news\/ci_26105204\/colorado-national-monument-push-become-national-park-put<\/a>). It would be nice, at a minimum to change the name to something a bit more descriptive; as the article indicates (and Kay's own misunderstandings highlight), the current name leaves folk pretty much in the dark as to what the heck the place actually is.<\/p>\n

And what it is is pretty cool.<\/p>\n
