At least when they&#8217;re the third grade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"block\">It&#8217;s one of the unfortunate consequences of being a mammal &#8211; flatulence.  And, more unfortunately for a group of whale researchers, nature took its course right under their noses &#8211; literally. <br \/>\nThe researchers claim <a href=\"\/blog\/images\/whalefarts.html\" onclick=\"window.open('\/blog\/images\/whalefarts.html','popup','width=200,height=348,scrollbars=no,resizable=no,toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,menubar=no,status=no,left=0,top=0'); return false\">this<\/a> is the first photograph of a minke whale letting one go in the icy waters of Antarctica. It was taken from the bow of a research vessel. <br \/>\n&#8220;We got away from the bow of the ship very quickly &#8230; it does stink,&#8221; said Nick Gales, a research scientist from the Australian Antarctic Division.<\/p>\n<p>I can just see the future dialog now.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dad<i>dy!!!<\/i>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just be glad I&#8217;m not a minke whale, honey.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is the sort of thing that folks dream of when growing up and considering a career in science.
