The Scotland independence vote has gone down to defeat, 55-45%. Looking at the map, the only areas that voted primarily yes were in Central Scotland — but that includes cities like Glasgow, so population-wise it was a much closer thing.<\/p>\n

It's a wide enough margin to make the decision clear and lasting (for some time), but not so wide enough that the results can be ignored. There's a lot of follow-on talk about "devolution" of power, or even a constitutional convention, coming from both Scotland and the central government leadership in London — as well as from folk in Wales and N. Ireland. The "winning" side will need to show at least some measure of good faith in following through on promises made during the campaign, or else the next go-around might not be quite so calm.<\/p>\n

At any rate, congratulations to the people of the UK, and Scotland in particular, for holding such a profoundly important referendum peacefully. You've set an example for the world.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
