{"id":4761,"date":"2004-01-10T08:35:51","date_gmt":"2004-01-10T15:35:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/?p=4761"},"modified":"2004-01-10T08:35:51","modified_gmt":"2004-01-10T15:35:51","slug":"disfluencies_in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2004\/01\/10\/disfluencies_in.html","title":{"rendered":"Disfluencies in the news!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my favorite words these days, here&#8217;s an interesting article on <a title=\"Think Tank: Just Like, Er, Words, Not, Um, Throwaways\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/01\/03\/arts\/03TANK.html\">international disfluencies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"block\">Though a bane to teachers of public speaking, people around the world fill pauses in their own languages as naturally as watermelons have seeds. In Britain they say <i>uh <\/i>but spell it <i>er<\/i>, just as they pronounce <i>er <\/i>in butter. <br \/>\nThe French say something that sounds like <i>euh<\/i>, and Hebrew speakers say <i>ehhh<\/i>. Serbs and Croats say <i>ovay<\/i>, and the Turks say <i>mmmmm<\/i>. The Japanese say <i>eto <\/i>(eh-to) and <i>ano <\/i>(ah-no), the Spanish <i>este<\/i>, and Mandarin speakers <i>neige <\/i>(NEH-guh) and <i>jiege <\/i>(JEH-guh). In Dutch and German you can say <i>uh, um, mmm<\/i>. In Swedish it&#8217;s <i>eh, ah, aah, m, mm, hmm, ooh, a<\/i> and <i>oh<\/i>; in Norwegian, <i>e, eh, m<\/i> and <i>hm<\/i>. <br \/>\nThese interruptions, it turns out, plague machines more than people \u2014 speech-recognition systems in particular \u2014 so researchers have increasingly been turning their attention to uh and um (among other so-called disfluencies).<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot of study of these sorts of things today, including whether such discourse markers actually convey information themselves during conversations.
