The GOP now controlling (or poised to control) both chambers of Congress, apparently there is serious consideration (or at least pointedly-public rhetorical nattering) about "disinviting" Pres. Obama from delivering his Statue of the Union as a speech within Congress. Because, y'know, Obama's a poopy-head whom they don't like very much and his mother dresses him funny.<\/p>\n

Yes, we've managed to go from being total frowny-faces to shouting "You Lie" to pulling up the ladder to the club-house. Welcome to politics in 2014.<\/p>\n

Honestly, there's no legal requirement for the SotU to be delivered in person, let alone on TV. The pertinent constitutional clause just says "periodically." Jefferson thought it was presumptuous and pompous, and just sent a written report. Everyone after that did the same until Woodrow Wilson brought it all back as a speech, so it's been about a century of speechfying.<\/p>\n

If the GOP decides to follow through with this, it seems more telling about them than about anything they're unhappy with Obama having done. Were I the president, I'd shrug, have the report delivered as written, and give a speech from the Oval Office about it, with a note about why it's being done that way, and let's move on.<\/p>\n

It's going to be a long two years.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
