The way Washington, DC, gets treated by its Congressional overlords is scandalous. Through the power of the purse for the city, Congress can (and does) block any city policy or law it likes, whether enacted by the local government or even a majority of the people.<\/p>\n

And, of course, DC doesn't get any voting representatives in Congress (it has a delegate<\/i> to the House, who can vote on procedural matters or in committee but not vote on the floor for or against legislation).<\/p>\n

Oh, and they pay federal taxes, too.<\/p>\n

While this sort of overlordship takes places regardless of who controls Congress, one would think that the GOP — defenders of federalism, local control, not to mention "no taxation without representation" — would be particularly respectful of the will of the voters of the District of Columbia.<\/p>\n

You would, of course, be wrong.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
