It's hard not to compare Killjoys<\/i> with the other new Syfy space show, Dark Matter.<\/i> In the case of Killjoys,<\/i> it's a highly favorable comparison.<\/p>\n
It's the story of a duo (apparently turning to trio) of bounty hunters doing their work as members of RAC (the Bounty Hunting guild), as the star system they operate in teeters on revolution and war. There's some violence, there's some mystery, there's some hard decisions coming down the line, and it all looks to be a decent amount of fun.<\/p>\n
The characters look to be enjoyable — the leader of the trio a Zoe\/Inara-with-assassin-training type, the junior member who's channeling Chris Pratt \/ Starlord in looks and attitude, and the ex-soldier who, like the leader, harbors some secrets. By making the protagonists not ostensibly good guys, they capture the rogueishness of Firefly<\/i> and Farscape,<\/i> while not straying (quite yet) into "heroes on the run" status. RACs operate outside of law and politics, in exchange for strict neutrality and serving warrants without question. As Our Heroes are already running into trouble with that, it makes for some nice built-in conflict.<\/p>\n
I was much more impressed with Killjoys<\/i> than Dark Matter<\/i> — sufficiently so, that I'm leaning toward dropping the latter without giving it a second episode chance (I'll probably try to squeeze in a viewing or two further, just to judge). While Killjoys<\/i> isn't the freshest, most ground-breaking TV ever, it's got the prospects of something to keep me coming back.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
